Let me tell you a secret...
Being a mum-of-two and a freelance writer makes setting boundaries hard.
BUT those boundaries are even more important now that I have my boys and a freelance business. Sticking to them, though? That can be the hardest part.
You know how it goes:
- Set a boundary. This year, I’m taking Fridays off!
- Break it. A new client needs me to do extra work—yay, more income!
- Convince yourself the boundary wasn’t that important anyway.
One of the hardest parts of freelancing—and let’s face it, running any business—is setting boundaries that stick. Even when I make space for myself (hello, Monday morning yoga), it’s not uncommon for my brain to creep back to work.
Yes, I may have tried to sneak content ideas into my phone during class while dodging my instructor’s side-eye. Guilty as charged.
This year, though, something had to change. And this wasn't just about leaving my phone outside class!
My time isn’t just pulled by work demands; I also have a responsibility to be there for my young family. And I can’t be there for them if I’m not showing up for myself.
So, I reimagined how boundaries would look in my life:
- Set meaningful boundaries: say no to projects that are unaligned with my energy and values; make space for weekly downtime; no working at the weekend.
- Honour those boundaries, even when it feels uncomfortable.
- Experience the rewards: better balance, more creative energy, and cherished moments with family.
Letting go of control isn’t easy, but it is necessary.
With my oldest going to school this year, my working hours will drop (excuse me while I work out how anyone does 3.30pm pick-up?!) For me, that means my boundaries will be more essential than ever.
And the beautiful thing about being your own boss?
You make the rules.
